The Story of Hamlet Is Prefaced During This Imaginative Production of Gertrude and Claudius

Founded in 1989, Orlando Shakespeare Theater in Partnership with UCF produces classic, contemporary, and children’s plays. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Jim Helsinger and Managing Director PJ Albert, Orlando Shakes has grown into one of the region’s most acclaimed professional Equity theaters. This season, Orlando Shakes is proud to present Gertrude and Claudius.

Serving as a prequel to Hamlet, Gertrude & Claudius brings a new point of view to the classic tale of guilt and revenge. The play follows young Gertrude through her forced marriage to Hamlet’s father and her relationship with his brother, Claudius, which begins with friendship, blossoms into love, and ends in murder.

The infamous couple serve as the villains in Shakespeare’s work, but are offered a new exposition in this tale of good intentions and family dysfunction. With ominous hints at the familiar story to come, Gertrude and Claudius is a play that shakes up what you thought you knew about Elsinore.

Funding for the commission of Gertrude & Claudius generously provided by Rita and John Lowndes. This play is a recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award. Ticket prices are $18-$30 depending on the selected seating area. You can purchase your tickets online at
